Rebecca Stevens A. lists the traits of her favorite white allies. A white colleague of mine demonstrates an additional attribute. She lives her allyship without fanfare. My critique partner, @Jessica Conoley, launched her new business, The Creative’s Apprentice, this year. The website’s home page, with its illustration of hands of every color holding puzzle pieces, speaks diversity loud and clear, right up front. She recently brought her first two partners on board. One is black. The other is — black. She facilitates scheduled co-writing sessions several times a week. When I tune in, I’m usually one of six writers on the Zoom screen: one Asian, two black, and three white. Jessica never announced that she intended to run an inclusive business or live an inclusive life. She simply interacts with BIPOCs like we’re ordinary, qualified, worthy human beings.
